This course introduces students to the study of history and what historians do throughout the study of ancient and medieval civilizations of the larger Mediterranean world that have strongly influenced contemporary civilization. This course begins with the study of the origins, major events and enduring influence of Greco-Roman civilization. Students then examine the rise of Christianity and Islam, the fall of Rome and the creation of feudal Western Europe and the later contact and conflict among the Byzantine, Islamic and medieval European civilizations. Analysis of ancient and primary sources is emphasized, as well as an approach that encourages students to view discrete historical events from multiple perspectives.
