Revolution, war, religion, heavy metal—all part of growing up. When Marjane Satrapi was ten years old, her country was thrown into turmoil by the Iranian Revolution. She was required to wear the veil, family friends were thrown into jail, and typical youthful rebellions were suddenly much more dangerous. She turned the joys and trials of her girlhood into art in her internationally acclaimed graphic memoir Persepolis. In this course, we will read and discuss Persepolis, research the Iranian Revolution, learn how to analyze images in concert with text, and create our own autobiographical graphic narratives. We will also view and discuss the award-winning film adaptation of the memoir.
